The fire is likely to have been caused by a short circuit in Savita Sizing factory on Saturday.

A massive fire broke out in a textile factory in Bhiwandi early on Saturday. The fire was doused after an hour-long operation.

According to officials, the fire broke out around 2:45 a.m. on the top floor of Savita Sizing factory in Babla Compound. Fire Brigade officers said five employees were sleeping on the second floor, but managed to escape as soon as the fire broke out.

“We rushed two fire tenders and two water tankers to the spot, and the fire was doused in around an hour. Cooling operations were conducted over the next two hours. No casualties were reported,” said Fire Officer Jagdish Sabre.

Officers said a short circuit is likely to have caused the fire, which spread through the clothes and machinery.

Officers with the Shanti Nagar police station said the five employees were sleeping in the factory temporarily, as they joined recently and were still looking for accommodation. All others had left at 11 p.m.

“We have recorded their statements and that of the manager, and have summoned the owner for inquiries. The extent of the damage is still being estimated, although the manager has said that the stock and machinery are no longer of use,” Senior Police Inspector K.D. Jadhav said.
