Angry relatives allegedly slapped doctors at Panjabrao Deshmukh Hospital in Amravati district of eastern Maharashtra after four infants died within a span of one hour in the hospital on Monday morning.
Two to three days old
Pradeep Chavan, Deputy Commissioner of Police, said, “All the infants were between two and three days old. Local people are alleging that the infants died because of the negligence of the doctors. But the cause of death can be ascertained only after conducting the post-mortem.”
Local TV channels also aired the footage of Dr. Bhushan Katta being slapped by the angry relatives. However, Mr. Chavan denied that the doctors were attacked. “There has been no arrest as the doctors were not attacked as such but a mob of about 200 people gathered at the hospital and there was some uproar,” Mr. CHavan said.
He also said that the post-mortem of the bodies would be conducted in the presence of a panel of doctors from the neighboring Akola district and it will be recorded on camera.
‘Gross negligence’
Local independent MLA Ravi Rana accused the hospital of “gross negligence” and the hospital administration of being “corrupt”.
