Mumbai: The Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU) of the Mumbai Police Crime Branch on Tuesday made one more arrest in the extortion case registered against Ravi Mallesh Bora alias D.K. Rao last week.

Mr. Rao was arrested on last Wednesday by the CIU after a Sion-based real estate developer, who had bagged the contract for a Slum Rehabilitation Authority project in Sion Koliwada, registered a complaint with the police. Mr. Rao is alleged to have demanded ₹50 lakh from the builder and effectively tried to take over the entire project at the behest of his boss Rajendra Nikhalje alias Chhota Rajan, who was later arrested and is now in the custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation in Delhi.

According to Crime Branch officers, the man arrested on Tuesday, Shankar Yerola (40), is a resident of Dharavi.

“Inquiries indicated that Mr. Yerola was part of the conspiracy to extort money from the complainant. We picked him up from his residence on Tuesday morning. After preliminary questioning, we placed him under arrest in the afternoon,” said an officer.

Mr. Yerola was subsequently produced in Esplanade Court and has been remanded in the Crime Branch’s custody till Wednesday. He and Mr. Rao, whose custody was till Tuesday, will be produced in court together on Wednesday afternoon, officials said.
