A decomposed body of a 46-year-old man was found in a well here on February 11, the police said on Saturday. The victim has been identified as Vinod Kumar, who had been absconding from Kerala. Two, including a minor have been apprehended for his murder.

One of the accused, identified as Gaurav Waghmare, 20, runs a water sports business in a nearby beach.

Working at a resort

Kumar was an accused in a Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) case registered in 2011 with the Varapuzha police, Ernakulam in Kerala. He was out on bail and had gone absconding since the last three years. “We have been told that he was not attending his trial as well and nobody knew his whereabouts. Here, he was working as a masseur in a resort at Kashid,” Nitin Gaware from Murud police station said.

On February 11, locals informed the police after noticing a body in the well. “The body was completely decomposed and was unidentifiable. The body was tied to a five-foot cement pole which was dumped inside the well. There had been no missing complaint in the nearby police stations, matching the description of the deceased,” Mr. Gaware said. While interrogating people in nearby resorts, the police found that a masseur had not reported to work since the last few days after which the victim’s identity was established.

The police found that the victim often used to consume alcohol with Waghmare and nabbed him. Kumar’s phone was found in Waghmare’s possession which led to his arrest. “The duo were friends with a married tribal woman in Kashid. The woman’s husband too was known to the victim. However, Waghmare started accusing Kumar of having an extramarital affair. A brawl ensued following which Waghmare killed Kumar with the help of a 14-year-old boy,” Mr. Gaware added.

Later, with the help of the victim’s Bengaluru-based friend, the police found that the victim was originally from Kannur in Kerala. The Kannur police and the victim’s family were informed about the death.
