The suspended police sub-inspector, who was on Friday arrested in a murder case, now faces dismissal from the force, police officers said.

Shyam Ahire, who was under suspension after being arrested in a bribery case in February, was on Friday arrested along with four others for allegedly beating a 25-year-old history-sheeter to death.

The five accused have been charged with murder under the Indian Penal Code and are currently in police custody.

An officer with the Mumbai Police said an inquiry has been initiated against him, which could eventually lead to his dismissal.

“We have started a departmental inquiry. Since Mr. Ahire is in police custody, we will wait for his release on bail, after which the inquiry panel will give him a chance to present his side. The law requires us to give him an opportunity before proceeding with further course of action. Once this is done, we will submit the report with our recommendations to the office of the Director General of Police, Maharashtra,” the officer said.

The officer said some recent incidents of serving policemen being accused of crimes have not gone unnoticed.

There was another case on Friday, when the Wadala police arrested a constable with the local arms unit for allegedly molesting a four-year-old girl from his locality.

“We have issued instructions to all police stations and unit heads to immediately arrest any policeman accused of a crime, where prima facie, the offence seems to have been committed, and to ensure no one is shielded simply because they wear a uniform. We hope this will send out a strong message to other personnel and acts as a deterrent,” the officer said.
