The world’s largest awareness walk on the concept of ‘modern slavery’ will take place simultaneously in 450 locations in 50 countries, including India, on October 20.

In Mumbai, the walks will be held in Bandra, Powai, Vasai and Juhu starting 6.30 a.m., and will see participation from college students and volunteers from non-governmental organisation (NGO). Corporates will extend their support by encouraging their employees to participate, while celebrities like stand-up comics, YouTube sensations and musicians, too, will be part of the walks.
From sex trafficking to child labour, India — which has over 10 million victims — has one of the largest numbers of people involved in modern slavery.
The walk, organised by international NGO A21, aims to raise awareness about the issue and gain support for the cause. The Mumbai end will be coordinated by The Movement India, a city-based NGO.
“Hundreds of non-government organisations and the government are working hard to eradicate any form of slavery from our country, but it won’t be possible without spreading awareness and active participation from every individual. This is why we need this movement,” Biju Thampy, founder, The Movement India and Vision Rescue, said.
Silent protest
Every participant will be wearing a black T-shirt and a bandana with a cross to represent the voiceless victims of slavery.
“The participants will be walking in a straight line without uttering a single word, carrying banners and posters spreading awareness,” Sam Koshy, leader, The Movement India, said.
Building support
Rajesh Jadhav, co-founder of Vision Rescue, said, “The government is providing its valuable support by providing us with all the permissions without delay. We have already received over 1,500 registrations.”
The primary motive, Mr. Thampy said, is to spread awareness among the people about exploitation and trafficking of children. “Once they see things this way they will join our fight.”
