Mumbai: To prevent breeding of mosquitoes at construction sites, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has issued notices to over 440 such sites to implement malaria prevention norms.
Dr. Ujjwala Oturkar, in-charge, Malaria Department, NMMC, said, “We have issued notices to 440 under-construction sites to take steps to prevent mosquito breeding. Legal action will be taken against those violating the directives.” The notices stated that due to carelessness by builders, water gets accumulated at their sites, leading to spread of the mosquito-borne disease.
Civic officers said they have also started inspecting such sites, and found mosquitos breeding at Pawane-Indiranagar MIDC and L&T at Labour Camp near the Seawoods Dharave railway station. “We found four breeding sites, three in Pawane-Indiranagar MIDC and one at the Seawoods L&T labour camp. We have sent them warning letters to ensure stagnant water is cleared. We will check the site next week, and if the situation hasn’t improved, we will send them a notice,” Dr. Otukar said.
“Builders have been asked to take up fogging, maintain cleanliness at the sites as they store water and also use water during flooring work. This water is left stagnant for days, and becomes a favourable spot for mosquito breeding " Ramesh Nikam, Medical Health Officer, NMMC, said.
