Mumbai: One person died in a fire at a building in Charni Road on Sunday. The fire broke out at Kothari House near Central Plaza cinema around 6 p.m.

The blaze was declared level III soon, and eight fire engines were sent to the spot. Five water jets and one turntable ladder were also pressed into operation. The three-storey building has shops on the ground floor and a children’s nursery on the upper three floors. The building’s internal staircase and plaster collapsed due to the fire.

One person identified as Khabir Alam (28) was found unconscious on the third floor. He was taken to Saifee hospital, but was declared dead before arrival. The fire was doused at 9.45 p.m.
