The CBD Belapur police on Tuesday offered to provide employment and shelter to a 25-year-old woman who was raped under the Belapur flyover in May 2012.

The woman and her friend were raped by two men. Her statement in court led to the conviction of the accused — Rahimuddin Shaikh alias John Anthony (29) and Sandip Shirsat alias Raghu Rokda (25). They were sentenced to death for raping two women and killing the friend. The body was found near Vashi Railway Station.

A braveheart

Senior Police Inspector Sangeeta Alphonso at CBD Belapur Police Station said. “I congratulated her for being brave and giving the right statement in court. We met her to understand her difficulties. She does not have a job or a home and has been surviving by picking up plastic and selling scrap. We have asked her to come to police station on Wednesday. We will connect her with some NGOs. She is keen on finding a job as a house maid.”

Life of penury

Hailing from Aurangabad, the woman has been living on the streets of Navi Mumbai for the past 20 years. Ms Alphonso said, “Her sister died years back. She is illiterate and has been struggling to find a job. The accused raped them on the pretext of offering jobs. The accused have been convicted but nothing has changed for the victim.”

The session court ordered the convicts to pay ₹15,000 as compensation to the victim and the legal heir of the deceased. “Forget the compensation, the convicts have not paid the fine of ₹5,000 in court. The accused don’t neither have income nor relatives to deposit the amount in court.”
