June 15, 2015 03:22 am | Updated 03:22 am IST - MUMBAI:

The exchange of recent visits by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Chinese President Xi Jinping have ensured a new environment of friendship and co-operation between the two countries, senior Chinese political leader Zhang Dejiang said here on Sunday. Mr. Dejiang, Chairman of China’s National People’s Congress, on a visit to the city, said the legendary work of Dr. Dwarkanath Kotnis in his country will always be remembered and this ‘Kotnis spirit’ of friendship and service must be preserved.

He was speaking at the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the ‘Indian Medical Mission to China 1938’ here. The family members of Dr. Kotnis were also present. “The people of China loved Dr. Kotnis and are keeping his memories alive even today,” said Dr. Kotnis’ sister Manorama Kotnis. The Chinese government has invited the family members for a special programme to be held there on September 3.

Earlier, Mr. Zhang met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and explored the possibilities of enhancing industrial and cultural collaboration in various fields.
