An elderly woman who was heading to the Ganesh temple in Andheri to offer prayers was run over by a bus at 11 a.m. while crossing the road on Saturday.

Officials said Kanchanben Mistry (75) was standing on the divider and lost her balance. A BEST official said, “She fell on the road and came under a BEST bus, which was heading to Vihar lake in Powai from Agarkar Chowk in Andheri. She sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to Cooper Hospital in Vile Parle, where she was declared dead before admission.”

Eyewitnesses and motorists caught the bus driver, Baban Thorat, and handed him over to the Andheri police, who sent a team to the spot. Mr. Thorat was arrested and charged with causing death due to rash driving under the Indian Penal Code along with relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Mistry’s son and daughter-in-law reached the hospital and the body will be handed over to them after the post-mortem.
