Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has invited bids for running 55 public parking lots in the city for the next two years.
The lots are spread across the city and have varying capacity of two-wheelers and four-wheelers. Those interested have have time till July 21 to place their bids.
As per rules, 50% lots are reserved for women’s self help groups, 25% for unemployed graduates and the rest are in the ‘open’ category. The Supreme Court had last year directed BMC to allow these groups to maintain lots following complaints of parking mafia running amock in the city.
However, since then, in many cases, self-help groups or youths did not come forth due to which work could not be allotted. They have alleged that the tender conditions are too stringent for them to be able to bid.
The BMC runs about 90 street parking lots in the city apart from 91 multi-level parking lots which are in the offing. The street parking lots are either maintained by BMC’s wards through contractors or are free. The contractors maintain these lots for a period of two years based on BMC’s terms and conditions.
Parking charges are determined by BMC and since last year, are being governed by its new parking policy.
