Mumbai: The BMC continued its inspection drive covering 795 eating houses on Thursday.

Twelve restaurants, including Jafarbhai Delhi Darbar on Grant Road, Ambience Bar and Kitchen in Lower Parel, Tap Resto Bar and Bonobo in Bandra, have been sealed in the drive which started on January 8.

“This drive is to create awareness among customers and restaurants of fire safety norms,” Nidhi Choudhari, Deputy Municipal Commissioner of removal and encroachments department, said.

The exercise is being jointly conducted with the fire brigade and various departments of the BMC such as the health and the shops and establishments. “We feel establishments risk the lives of customers when they flout fire safety norms. People who visit these restaurants are unaware of the non-compliance of rules,” Ms. Choudhari said.

She also said that only restaurants that were posing imminent danger have been sealed. The rest have had their licence suspended and have been given 15 days for compliance.

The BMC has also demolished illegal structures at 135 restaurants and bars.
