A service provider will be appointed to implement an Intelligent Transport Management System (ITMS), the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport committee said on Tuesday.
The centralised ITMS will organise activity related to bus services, depots and workshops. This will include scheduling and planning of routes and frequency of buses. The system will also include a passenger information system (PIS) for real-time information on bus movements, on board and at stops and depots, as well as rush at bus stops.
A control centre will be set up as part of the ITMS to track bus movement. It will also enable digital and paperless transactions for daily records, dynamic rostering and allocation of work and leave for BEST staff. The transport utility expects ITMS to ensure efficient and convenient bus services.
The contract for installing and maintaining the ITMS has been awarded to Quess Corp Limited, and will cost ₹112 crore. Surendrakumar Bagde, general manager, BEST, said the project is backed by the BMC and had been included in the 2017-18 civic budget.
“It’ll take around nine months to develop the system and another three for trials and testing. The contractor will maintain it for five years.”
