Sunil Bharti Mittal-led Bharti Airtel, India’s second largest telco by number of subscribers, has upgraded its 4G network in Mumbai with the deployment of LTE (long term evolution) 900 technology.

Given the high propagation and reach of the 900 Mhz spectrum, Airtel customers will enjoy improved 4G availability inside homes, offices and malls. It will also result in wider availability of Airtel 4G across Mumbai, said a company statement adding that with the roll out of 4G in the superior 900 Mhz spectrum band, Airtel customers will get additional high-speed data capacity to serve its customers.

Amit Tripathi, CEO – Mumbai, Bharti Airtel Ltd., said, “Our endeavour is to deliver best-in-class network experience to our customers. The deployment of LTE 900 will further boost Airtel’s 4G coverage, particularly inside homes and buildings. Airtel smartphone customers will enjoy a seamless high-speed data and HD quality calling experience on our upgraded network. We will continue to invest aggressively in deployment of latest network technologies to delight our customers.”

In Mumbai, Airtel uses a spectrum in the 2300 Mhz, 1800 Mhz, and 900 Mhz bands to offer 4G services to customers. In addition, Airtel has deployed advanced network technologies and tools such as pre-5G Massive MIMO, 4G Advanced and carrier aggregation to step up its high-speed network capacity and coverage, said the statement.

Airtel is used by over 8.4 million customers in Mumbai. Recently, the company announced that it will expand its network in the city by rolling out 7,000 new mobile broadband sites and 400 km of fresh optic fibre during FY19 under its network transformation programme – Project Leap.

Bharti Airtel shares on BSE closed down 3% at ₹301 in a weak Mumbai market on Thursday, valuing the company at ₹1,20,342 crore.
