Cops on robbery case assaulted by suspect

Mumbai: Two constables with Andheri police station were injured in an attack by a gang of history-sheeters when they went to make inquiries with them early on Friday.

According to the police, the incident occurred around 3.30 a.m. when Constables Santosh Lokhande and Siraj Mujawar, both attached to the detection squad at Andheri police station, reached the residence of a suspect identified as Shakir Sheikh, a repeat offender with a history of thefts, robberies and burglaries.

“The constables had information that some valuables connected to a robbery were hidden in Shakir's house, and had gone to his residence in Anand Nagar, Jogeshwari to verify this. Shakir was with his wife Shaheen, brother Hussain and another man. All four attacked the constables when they tried to make inquires,” an Andheri police station officer said.

In the scuffle, Shakir allegedly attacked both constables with a knife, injuring Mr. Lokhande’s finger and Mr. Mujawar in the chest. All four managed to flee before the backup called in by the constables from Oshiwara police station could reach the spot. Police have registered a case against the four suspects and had Shakir, Hussain and Shaheen by evening.

Senior PI Subhash Khanvilkar, Oshiwara police station, said, “Both Shakir and Hussain have criminal records, and Shakir has been externed from the city twice in the past. All three arrested accused have been remanded in police custody till Monday, and we are on the lookout for the fourth accused.”
