A team from the Khar police led by police inspector Daya Nayak arrested three accused who were allegedly found to be in possession of over 1.5 kg of mephedrone near National College bus stop at 4 a.m. on Thursday. Inquiries indicate an inter-State link, the police said.
An officer who is part of the investigation said, “We received information that the three accused would be coming to the spot with a large quantity of drugs. We then laid a trap and picked up the trio. A search of their bags revealed a total of 1.523 kg of mephedrone.”
The accused — Sanjay Pande (42), Sachin Mudaliar (42) and Roshankumar Pande (32) — have been charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The officer said, “Investigations have revealed that the drugs were procured from Uttar Pradesh. As the accused are all Mumbai residents and the quantity of drugs is large, we suspect they were the Mumbai-end link of the supply chain. There are several others involved from the source to the end user. The drugs seem to be a consignment meant for distribution among smaller peddlers.”
The police also found out that the accused, Sanjay, was arrested in 2012 by the Delhi police, and released on bail. “All we know for sure so far is that the case was filed under the NDPS Act. We have sought more information from the Delhi police,” the officer said.
