As many as 21 patients, including two newborn babies who were rescued from the ESIC Hospital fire, continue to be hospitalised. While most patients have been shifted to general wards, one patient is currently on ventilator support at Seven Hills Hospital and the two babies are in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of Holy Spirit Hospital.
More than 150 people injured in the fire at the ESIC Hospital, Marol, on December 17 were admitted to various hospitals in the city. Doctors said all the patients had smoke inhalation injuries, and as most of them were already ill, their recovery has been slow.
At the civic-run Cooper Hospital, only five of the injured are currently admitted and all of them are in general wards. “A 21-year-old woman, Prachiti Patil, who was on ventilator support and in serious condition for the first few days has responded well to treatment and has been shifted out of the ICU. All the patients are now stable,” the on-duty medical officer at Cooper Hospital said.
Of the 25 patients who were rushed to the HBT Trauma Care Hospital in Jogeshwari, two women continue to be under observation. “Both are surgery patients and have been kept under observation for a long time,” medical superintendent Dr. H.S. Bawa said.
He said three patients were referred to other hospitals due to renal ailments.
The Holy Spirit Hospital has 10 of the patients hurt in the fire, including two newborn babies in the NICU. Doctors said the remaining eight are in the general wards and stable.
At Seven Hills Hospital, a patient with haemorrhage is the only one on ventilator support. “Another patient who was in the ICU was shifted to the ward on Wednesday. Hence, three patients are now in the general ward,” a doctor said.
