Mumbai: The popular Juhu beach will now be illuminated after sunset by a 100 street lights across a 4.5-km stretch.
Yuva Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray and Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar inaugurated the Brihanamumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) illumination project on Monday evening.
The BMC has put up over 100 street lights, each over 12 metres high, as part of the beach beautification project. Each of the light posts has a plaster of Paris model in the design of a boat at its base, which in turn is also decked with four colourful LED lights.
The illumination will make the beaches safer and more accessible to visitors even late in the evening, the BMC has said.
Lights have also been put up near the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji and near the police chowky on the beach, where a colourful ‘media tree’ has been put up.
The lights will illuminate the seafront in various colours. While Juhu beach stretches for 6 km up to Versova, the illumination project is along a 4.5-km stretch.
The control room of the lighting system is located near the police chowky, and each light post has a loudspeaker installed on it.
The lights cost around ₹20 crore. The project was financed through the tourism development fund following a proposal by BJP legislator Ameet Satam. “These lights have changed the look of the promenade. The BMC must light up other beach promenades in the city in the same way,” Mr. Satam said.
Mr. Thackeray later tweeted, “Inaugurated the Themed Light Project at Juhu Chowpatty this evening, making it even more beautiful.”
