Service at the click of a mouse was just a virtual dream for many who desperately surfed the web space for workers to do odd jobs in Kozhikode city. Catering to that urban segment, ‘Swabhiman’ made its quiet entry in 2010 with a team of coconut climbers.

The promise then made was nothing but quick response to online service requests through the portal swabhiman.gov.in.

It is five years now after the formation of the well-defined integrated software solution based on the twin-concept of employment generation and making available the service of skilled personnel for the household needs.

The strength of 100 ready-to-work labourers currently proclaims the success of this pet project, which is awaiting a State-wide roll out.

Steady income

M. Krishnan, one of the senior most members of the labour force, says with pride that he has been getting a steady income since the launch of the project in 2010. Though the man is hardly aware of the technologies involved in the work generation process, he is fully content with the opportunities he gets through the platform.

“I was among the first 10 persons who joined the scheme when it was announced first under the headship of the then Collector P.B. Salim. We never knew that this was going to be a life-changing technology,” says Krishnan, who is a native of Koduvally. In the absence of the office staff, I am now able to manage even the office affairs,” he says with the confidence he gained through the past years’ experience.

At present, “Swahabiman’ is all prepared to offer service in 26 different trades, including the most common plumbing and electrical works.

SMS (9446 460600) and telephone (0495-2372666) service requests too have been incorporated to cater better to the service seekers.

Unni Krishnan, District Coordinator of the projects says several new trades have been recently added taking into account of the increased number of inquiries.

For example, Yoga is one of the latest additions and the citizens can avail the service of a professional trainer at their door step. Similarly, midwifery service too has been added to the service list, he adds.
