The members of the English Club at AKM Higher Secondary School, Kottoor, gave a surprise to the Kottakkal neighbourhood when they published the latest edition of their newspaper during the summer vacation.

People were surprised to pick up a more colourful four-page tabloid along with their morning dailies recently.

Unlike the ad sheets they get along with the newspapers every day, people did not throw away the English newspaper titled Kottoorkids.com.

They were keen to revisit the achievement the school made in this year’s SSLC exams. AKMHSS, Kottoor, had stood first in the State by getting a full pass with the most number of students, and the front page headline ran ‘854 out of 854.’

“Bringing out newspapers like this is a bold step in improving the writing skills of the students,” said Rajesh Ramath, staff editor of the paper.

Apart from displaying the achievements of the school, the paper carries the messages of Education Minister C. Ravindranath and school manager Ibrahim Haji on the front page.

Although the contents of the paper are far from news, the students displayed enthusiasm and vigour in writing.

A quick comparison with the magazines of certain English-medium schools under the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in the area reveals the effort. “We have plans to increase the periodicity of the paper,” said Mr. Ramath.
