Poets’ gesture to flood-hit tribespeople

Writers should make their presence felt not just at social and cultural gatherings; they should show up when people need help during disasters as well, believes Kavyayanam, a poets’ collective here.

The one-year-old collective is reaching out to the flood-ravaged tribal hamlets in Wayanad.

The team of 15 poets went out to the hamlet handing food supplies to residents of Chembothara tribal colony in Meppadi on August 15.

“Supplies are coming to the rehabilitation camps in this region from all parts of the State. But the people at tribal hamlets are still in distress,” said Biju T.R. Puthancheri, one of the poets.

No jobs

Most of the tribal people here are daily wage labourers. But they have no jobs these days, after the flood. The roofs are leaking, while the people beneath them are battling various diseases as well as poverty.

“The ration is never enough for these families that consists of children as well as elderly people,” Mr. Biju said.

On Thursday, Suresh Parapram and Jinesh Kovilakam, along with Mr. Biju reached the colony to hand over the supplies.
