‘Peace only if IUML wills’

January 29, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:38 am IST - Kozhikode:

Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] district unit secretary P. Mohanan said here on Wednesday that peace could be restored at Nadapuram and its adjoining regions only if the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) stopped indulging in violence in the region.

Citing an incident in which five IUML activists were killed while making bombs before the elections in 2011, he said a Crime Branch probe had revealed that senior IUML leadership had links with mobilising funds for the purpose. However, a senior officer conducting the investigation, C.M. Pradeepkumar, was transferred.

The same officer had been shifted when he got evidence about the source of funds and the conspiracy in the massacre of nine fishermen on the Marad beach on May 2, 2003. The case was shelved following the IUML’s intervention, he alleged.

Terming unfortunate the incidents at Thooneri and Velloor after the murder of DYFI activist Chandayankandi Shibin, Mr. Mohanan demanded that the police conduct an impartial inquiry into the arson and looting. Three CPI (M) workers were also stabbed during the funeral procession.
