May 11, 2013 12:06 pm | Updated 12:06 pm IST - Kozhikode:

A staff nurse at the Government Medical College Hospital here has been suspended in connection with a woman’s death on Thursday night following blood transfusion.

Thankam, 61, a resident of Kuttiyilthazham in the city was being treated for stomach ailment in ward 26 of the Women’s and Children’s Hospital on the medical college premises.

A. Rahana, the nurse, had apparently mistaken her for Thankamma, another patient in the ward who required blood transfusion.

Thus, Thankam, who had O+ blood group, was given A+ blood, that resulted in her death later in the night.

After the relatives of the deceased filed a complaint with the Medical College police, Rahana was suspended pending inquiry.

Thankam’s body will be released after autopsy on Saturday.
