After a two-year delay, the Vadakara coastal police station, constructed at a cost of ₹45 lakh as part of coastal security projects, will be opened on August 13 by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

The coastline between Koyilandy and Azhiyoor will be under the new station, which will have a staff strength of 29, including a circle inspector and three sub inspectors. The new unit is expected to lessen the workload of the nearby rural police stations.

To coordinate rescue operations and regular patrolling activities, essential accessories for the station have been purchased at a cost of ₹10 lakh.

Training of officials have also been completed. The team will be brought under the control of the District Police Chief (Kozhikode Rural).

Besides attending to regular law and order issues, the coastal police will be responsible for coordinating emergency rescue operations during times of crisis. They will work in close coordination with various other units specialised in rescue operations and disaster management. Regular sea patrolling too will be the responsibility of the coastal police.

Efforts are on to construct a boat jetty for the coastal police near the existing station building. The Vadakara municipal authorities will look into the requirement and hand over the required extent of land for the purpose.
