Labour Minister T.P. Ramakrishnan has promised the full support of his department to ensure better living standards for transgenders in the State. He was speaking at the conclusion of an entrepreneurship development training programme for transgender individuals (TGIs) in Kozhikode on Sunday.
“Ensuring a means of livelihood is equivalent to ensuring a respectable position in society. Every one has a right to get their needs, interests and dreams fulfilled and live a dignified life,” he said.
The week-long training programme saw transgenders coming up with enterprising ideas and areas of interest they would like to explore. “They have suggested setting up BPOs in civil stations where they could take up data entry operations and share the workload of some departments,” said P. Janaki, District Coordinator of Centre for Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development (C-STED).
Around 20 participants from north Kerala took part in the training. “Our aim is to ensure that at least 20 people from a district get employed in the next two years,” Ms. Janaki said.
