“I don’t care if it is just thousand rupees. But it has to be my own earning,” the words sound too mature for a seven-year-old. But Dakshina was firm on her stand even while trying out a game on her mother’s mobile phone. The second standard student of Government L.P. School, Thrikkandiyoor, Tirur, wants to make her own contribution to the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund (CMDRF). She plans to raise the amount through the sale of her paintings.

Dakshina has been painting ever since she could hold a piece of chalk in her hand.

The maiden exhibition of her paintings that started at Gurukulam Art Gallery in Kozhikode on Tuesday features paintings done over the past three to four years.

The exhibition is notable for the number of works on display, 375, which is probably a record for any artist of her age.

“She watched on TV children handing over money from their piggy bank to the CMDRF and felt she should do something too. But she was doubtful if anyone would buy her works,” her mother Shyni said. Dakshina says she wants to hand over the money directly to the Chief Minister.
