Ganja seizure: police intensify probe

May 08, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:48 am IST - Kozhikode:

Following the arrest of two Payyanakkal natives with 10 kg of ganja on Wednesday, the City police have intensified their efforts to trace wholesale suppliers of the contraband, who reportedly operate from Kambam and Theni in Tamil Nadu.

Senior police officers said a decision had been taken to send an investigation team to these locations and trace the gang to stop the flow of the drug to the State.

The arrested — P.T. Abinas, 31, and C.V. Nazar, 32, — confessed that they had been smuggling the product from these two locations by train, the police said.

The accused had been using costly trolley bags and shopping bags to carry the drugs.

“We have seized their mobile phones to trace the details of the big and small retailers of the drug and the inquiry is proceeding on the basis of the evidence gathered,” they said.

A senior police officer said that even after the seizure of the phones, several calls were received to the mobile enquiring about the availability of ganja.

'“The callers included both migrant labourers and students,” he said.

It has been after a while that the City police seized such a huge quantity of ganja smuggled to the city. The plan of the duo was to sell the drug in Feroke and Kallayi, the police said.
