Study on water quality check at school labs

High-end testing equipment to be provided to select science labs

Based on a directive of the Department of Water Resources, the Centre for Water Resources Development and Management (CWRDM) will conduct a feasibility study for setting up water quality testing facilities in science labs at government higher secondary schools in the State. This is part of the government’s efforts to address water quality issues at the local level.

“The study will consider the possibility of redesigning science labs for the purpose,” said P.S. Harikumar, Senior Principal Scientist and head of CWRDM’s water quality division. The cost of the project will come to around ₹5 lakh for each lab, and the funds are likely to be mobilised through government schemes, he added.

CWRDM is conducting the study on suggestions from Water Resources Minister Mathew T. Thomas and Water Resources Department Secretary Tinku Biswal. Interestingly, CWRDM’s water quality division has an on-hand report on the matter, and it will be re-evaluated in the wake of the latest directive.

Mr. Harikumar said the project would offer water testing apparatus such as spectrophotometer, PH metre, turbidity metre, and incubator to select science labs. “The project can be easily piloted in a selected district or schools before a Statewide rollout. Science teachers can also be trained for handling lab activities,” he added. Since bacterial contamination remains the biggest challenge, the CWRDM report is likely to suggest purchase of high-end equipment that supports quality testing needs. Aided and private higher secondary schools may be encouraged for taking up the scheme later.
