A farmer was reported to have committed suicide by hanging himself outside a village office in Kozhikode district on Wednesday night.

Kavilpurayidathil Joy, alias Thomas, 57, of Chakkittapara took the extreme step after he was turned away by the staff of the Chembanod village office when he went there to pay land tax, police sources said, quoting his suicide note.

His body was found at 9.15 p.m. The Congress has called for a dawn-to-dusk hartal at Chakkittapara on Thursday.

There was reportedly a family dispute over the said land.

He was allowed to pay the land tax last year only after he staged a hunger strike outside the village office along with his family.

It is learnt that he handed over his suicide note to the village office staff in the evening on Wednesday and later committed suicide.
