Efforts are on to rescue two fishermen from Vadakara in Kozhikode district who are believed to be stranded in the rough sea off the Ezhimala coast in Kannur after Cyclone Maha lashed the Malabar coast on Thursday.
According to Fisheries Department officials, of the seven fibre fishing boats that ventured into the sea on Thursday morning, six had returned. The one stranded near Ezhimala had set off from Azhithala near Vadakara and belongs to Karancheri Aboobacker.
The district administration has sought the help of the Coast Guard and the Navy for rescue operations, the officials said. District Collector S. Sambasiva Rao has urged fishermen not to venture into the sea.
This follows reports about fishermen ignoring the warning issued by the district administration on Wednesday.
Thirty-four persons from seven families have been shifted to a relief camp opened at Sharaful Islam Madrasa, Mandamangalam, after seawater entered their houses on Parappally beach in Viyyur village of Koyilandy taluk.
Meanwhile, activities at the Beypore port were suspended in the wake of the turbulent sea. Port officials said that three goods vessels and one passenger ship had been asked to wait till the situation improved. Another six vessels that are loaded with goods have been asked not to proceed. Services to Lakshadweep have been suspended. The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert predicting severely bad weather for Kozhikode district on Friday.
