Dharna for a river’s revival

May 04, 2013 02:38 pm | Updated November 17, 2021 12:26 pm IST - Kozhikode:

The Mampuzha Samrakshana Samithi will stage protests demanding that the survey of the Mampuzha, which has been suspended, be resumed immediately. Presidents of grama panchayats along the river, representatives of other local bodies, and environmentalists will take part in the dharna to be held at the Kozhikode Collectorate from 10 a.m. on May 6.

The survey had started a while ago as part of efforts to revive the Mampuzha river, which is in danger due to encroachments and garbage deposits. The survey was abandoned half-way, and the samithi has been demanding its resumption ever since.

District Collector K.V. Mohan Kumar had also ordered the Survey Superintendent to resume the survey of the remaining 8 kilometres of the river, but the order is yet to be followed. Hence the samithi had decided to launch protest demanding completion of the survey and measures to revive the river, a release said.
