Vadakara MP and Congress leader K. Muraleedharan has said that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who holds the Home portfolio, has lost control over the police department. “It appears that the police do not heed the instructions of the Chief Minister”, he told journalists here on Monday.

He wondered why the police charged the two suspects under serious charges even when the State government affirmed that it was against Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

Mr. Muraleedharan alleged that State Police Chief Loknath Behera was a bridge connecting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Chief Minster. A caucus was functioning under his leadership in the police department.

The Congress -led UPA government brought the UAPA to tackle terrorists. But this was being misused today. Incidentally, the provisions were employed by the party which had opposed such laws, against its own party men, he said.

Mr. Muraleedharan also said that the government led by the CPI(M) had lost collective responsibility in dealing with extremism. The CPI should come out of the government instead of playing a double game by criticising the policies of the government, he said.
