Calicut Flower Show from January 7

The theme for week-long show is organic vegetable farming

The 39th Calicut Flower show, organised by the Calicut Agri-Horticultural Society, will be held at Marine Grounds on Kozhikode Beach from January 7 to 13.

According to a press release, the show will be inaugurated by MLA A. Pradeep Kumar while president of the society and District Collector C.A. Latha will preside over the function.

The theme for the show this year is ‘Organic vegetable farming’. To promote organic farming, good quality seeds and saplings from Kerala Agriculture University, Thrissur, and Government farm, Koothali, will be made available at the venue of the flower show.

Besides exhibition of different kinds of flowering plants, the show will also feature stalls of government and semi-government institutions such as Directorate of Areca nut and Spices Development; Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Peruvannamuzhi; Kerala State Coir Corporation; Agmark; Vegetable and Fruit Promotion Council, Keralam; and Government Farm, Thikkodi, where their unique products will be on display and sale.

Seminars, classes

The Directorate of Areca nut and Spices Development will hold seminars and classes at the venue. There will be several food stalls as well. Cultural programmes will be performed at the open stage at the venue every evening. Pushparaja and Pushparani competitions will be held for kids as usual besides painting competition for children.

There will be competition for organic farms in schools to promote farming among children. The first prize is Rs.2,000, while the second and third prize winners get Rs.1,500 and Rs.1,000, respectively. The leading school will get a rolling trophy from the District Collector.

Flower arrangement competitions will be held at the venue, the winner of which will get Rs.5,000. Second and third prizes are Rs.3,000 and Rs.2,000 respectively. The best decoration will earn a trophy. All participants will get consolation prizes.

The exhibition will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
