District Collector U.V. Jose has directed officials to ensure the registration of migrant workers in the Garima scheme being implemented for their welfare by the administration.
At a review meeting here on Tuesday, the officials pointed out that many owners had not submitted the details of migrant labourers staying in their buildings with the respective local bodies.
Lack of hygiene, drinking water shortage, and unscientific waste mechanisms to dispose waste were noticed in most places housing the labourers. Also, many migrant labourers were found to have been involved in crimes.
Personal details
Mr. Jose told the officials that the personal details of the labourers, along with copies of their identity proof, should be submitted to the secretary of the civic body as well as at the jurisdictional police station.
Inspection of camps
The examination of labour camps by committees involving ward members, health inspectors, police officials, and panchayat/municipality secretaries would continue under the Garima scheme. Notices would be served on building owners if the premises fail in ensuring health standards. If there was no improvement in the situation later, those camps would be ordered to shut down, he added.
