The proposed infrastructural facelift of the General Hospital (GH) is expected to ease the burden of patients on Government Medical College. The plan is to modernise the existing structures and build a six-storey building.
A meeting was held here on Saturday to discuss the draft master plan. A. Pradeep Kumar, MLA, and officials of the departments of Health and Public Works, among others, were present.
The plan is to utilise the ₹164-crore fund earmarked for hospital development under the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB). A sum of ₹50 crore will be spent on the new building to be constructed north of the existing structure. It will be spread across 1.5 lakh sq ft. There will be 250 beds at the renovated hospital, and each ward will have at least six beds.
The ground floor will house a diagnostic centre, casualty section, and mortuary. The first, second and third floors will have the wards. The fourth floor will have an intensive care unit and cardiology unit.
Operation theatre, post-operative facilities, and rooms for doctors and nurses will be on the fifth floor. The sixth floor will have a centralised sterilisation unit and a central laboratory.
A sum of ₹20 crore will be spent on an apartment complex for doctors, which will have 42 bedrooms.
The outpatient block will be converted into administration section with a conference hall that can accommodate around 100 people.
The existing building, which is over 60 years old, will be converted into a heritage structure, according to sources.
It was also proposed to build a supermarket on the premises.
Another round of discussions will be held this week before the master plan is submitted to the government for approval, the sources said.
