An alliance of secular forces is needed to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the next Lok Sabha elections, Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar has said. He was here on Tuesday to attend an event organised by the Muslim Youth League.

“Indian polity has been fractured and the BJP has come on top of it. If we don’t stop them, it will destroy a civilisation that has been in existence for 5,000 years,” Mr. Aiyar said. The future of the country depended on defeating the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Vishwa Hindu Parishad, and the BJP. “Before they consolidate their strength and make India a Hindu Rashtra, we need to stop it,” he said.

“I am hopeful. A majority of the people in India are not voting for the BJP. In the just concluded elections in Uttar Pradesh, they got only 38 per cent of votes,” he said.
