Questioning the new-found bonhomie between West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday flagged the Chief Minister’s refusal in the past to accompany former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Bangladesh.
“It was aeklacholo re then,” Mr. Gandhi said referring to Rabindranath Tagore’s song, which means walk alone.
“Now with Modiji, there is no aekla cholo re . They are going together… why is this happening, why is this bonhomie, you know it better,” Mr. Gandhi said addressing Congress workers at the Netaji Indoor Stadium in the city.
Many Congress leaders alleged that there was a tacit understanding between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP that has resulted in Saradha scam probe losing steam. Mr. Gandhi said both Mr. Modi and Ms. Banerjee have made promises to the people but were not bothered to fulfil them. “As per government records, there are one crore unemployed in the State,” he said.
Ms. Banerjee has taken the same path followed by the Left Front government and has implemented the previous government policies more forcefully.
Reaching out to workers of a jute mill in West Bengal’s Hooghly district, Mr. Gandhi asserted his commitment towards weaker sections of society.
“I am with you all… Wherever you will see weak people you will find Rahul Gandhi standing beside them,” Mr. Gandhi said interacting with them at the Wellington Jute Mill complex.
First the Left Front put the brakes on the development on Bengal and when people replaced it with Trinamool Congress hoping that it will accelerate growth, the party has applied brakes more forcefully.
