Claiming that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) would disintegrate in the near future, State Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said here on Saturday that most of the TMC members would come back to the Congress fold, while a small portion would go to the BJP.
“The TMC is set to go into oblivion and will be erased from political history,” Mr. Chowdhury told media persons.
Asked if the Congress would join hands with the TMC in fighting communalism in West Bengal, he said TMC was a “bi-product of the Congress” and it made no sense in uniting with the party.
The remarks by the State Congress president comes at a time when the TMC is under considerable stress over the alleged involvement of certain leaders in the Saradha scam and leaders of the party are sometimes speaking in different voices.
“It is the Congress’s tradition to fight against communalism and it has been doing so for the past 130 years, while the TMC has been around for only 16 years. The (TMC) has learnt secular policies from us. How can we enter into an alliance with them in this fight?” Mr. Chowdhury questioned.
The party’s State committee will be holding a public meeting at Shahid Minar ground in Kolkata on January 20 to protest both against the communal policies of the BJP-led Central government and the multi-crore Saradha Group scam and spread of terrorism in West Bengal, Mr. Chowdhury said. Incidentally, BJP president Amit Shah will be holding a public meeting in Bardhaman district on the same day.
