Heavy rain washes over Kolkata and nearby districts of West Bengal

Kolkata witnessed torrential downpour on Monday morning. Many localities including Ultadanga, Patipukur, Tollygunge, M.G. Road and Syed Amir Ali Avenue were waterlogged.

A local news report stated a fisherman has drowned in the flooded ocean, while two casualties have been reported due to flooding in a city market. However, police is yet to confirm these deaths.

Cars were compelled to use headlights even at 8:30 am on Monday, as thick rain clouds engulfed the city. Manholes have been opened and traffic control officers are working to prevent vehicle blockades.

The rains have resulted in high-tide on the river Ganga, and it is on the verge of overflowing. The lock-gate of the drainage channel near the water body will not be opened before 1pm.

The IMD forecast predicted heavier rains in the afternoon, and over the course of the next two days.

The showers also arrived atthe districts of Malda, Purulia, North and South 24 Parganas and Nadia and is likely to proceed north to Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri.
