A day after the declaration of by-elections to two Assembly segments in the State, the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) announced the name of its candidates on Sunday.

Speaking to journalists at the party’s State headquarters, AITC general secretary Mukul Roy said in Chowrangee segment in central Kolkata, his party would field Nayna Bandyopadhyay.

From Basirhat (Dakshin) segment in North 24 Parganas, former member of the Indian football team Dipendu Biswas would contest. Ms. Bandyopadhyay, wife of AITC leader in Parliament Sudip Bandyopadhyay, was elected MLA from Bowbazar in the 2001 Assemble elections.

In the general elections, the AITC trailed behind the Congress in Chowrangee and in Basirhat the BJP had a prominent lead over the AITC.

The by-elections would be held on September 13 and results would be declared on September 16.
