AAP to test waters in West Bengal

The Delhi-based party is likely to put up candidates in Bengal election, says local leaders

New political equations may emerge in West Bengal as some leaders of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has claimed that the party may contest in all 294 seats in the Assembly elections in the state.

“We decided after the Lok Sabha election that we will contest. We will finalise the plan once we meet the leadership in Delhi after the swearing-in ceremony,” said Alok Chaturbedi, AAP’s candidate from Kolkata South in the 2014 election. However, Mr Chaturbedi has not spoken to the top leadership after Wednesday’s victory.

In case the party tries to set-up district wise offices in Bengal then it may affect the prospects of many parties, including ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), which is canvassing for AAP, so far.

TMC chief Mamta Banerjee, who is going overboard since morning and congratulating AAP for a landslide majority, is yet to react to the party’s plan to put up candidate in all the seats. AAP may actually cut into the vote share of the ruling party in West Bengal, as TMC leaders are facing several corruption charges in the state, unfolding new political dynamics.
