Intensifying their demand for 50% reservation for government doctors in postgraduate admissions, nearly 70 government doctors staged a road roko at the junction of the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital (GVMCH) in Adukkamparai on Tuesday.
V. Chandramohan, secretary of Tamil Nadu Government Doctors Association, Vellore, said doctors of government hospitals and primary health centres took part in the protest.
“We are cancelling all elective surgeries at the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital on Wednesday. There will be no camps or review meeting. There would be only outpatient services and emergency surgeries,” he said.
He said two phases of counselling were over for the all-India post graduate admissions, but awarding 30% marks for working in difficult and remote areas was not followed. “In such a situation, why should it be enforced in Tamil Nadu?” he questioned.
He said the 50% reservation for government doctors in postgraduate admissions was implemented in the State for 25 years. Marks were being awarded based on the number of years in government service. DDr. Chandramohan added they would be going on mass casual leave and observe a token strike. Police arrested the doctors for resorting to road blockade.
