The Mettur Municipality has urged the people not to wash clothes in the meagre water flowing in River Cauvery.

In a statement here on Friday, Narayanan, Municipal Commissioner, said that a water pumping station of the Mettur Municipality was functioning near the Cauvery bridge. The water from this pumping station was taken to a treatment plant before supplying to residents of Mettur town.

Due to severe drought conditions, very meagre water was being released from Mettur Dam into River Cauvery for meeting the drinking water needs.

The local residents have been washing clothes in the river water. Many perform the final rites of the dead too on the river bank. This spoiled and polluted the river water.

The Municipal Commissioner called upon the people not to wash clothes in the river water near the Cauvery bridge. They should also refrain from polluting the water.
