Barely 10 days after a police constable was brutally attacked and murdered at Sunguvarchatram on the city’s outskirts, another on-duty constable was attacked in Royapettah by a gang on Monday night.

A gang of history-sheeters, in a drunken state, attacked the policeman in Royapettah when he reached the spot where they were creating trouble.

A resident made a call to the police control room and complained about a few youngsters indulging in a drunken brawl besides teasing women in the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board apartments on P.M. Dhargah Street.

A senior police official said: “Following the call, Rajavelu, the beat officer, rushed to the spot on his bike. He found the gang consuming liquor right on the street. Mr. Rajavelu asked them to disperse. When he neared them, the gang members drew knives and injured him in the head. They would have caused him more harm but for the local patrol team that reached the area and the public which gathered at the spot. Seeing the crowd, the gang members fled, leaving Mr. Rajavelu in a pool of blood.”

Under treatment

He was rushed to the Government Royapettah Hospital. He suffered six cuts on his head, ears and face. On Tuesday morning, the doctors declared him out of danger.

After a chase, the Royapettah police arrested six suspects — Mahesh, 24, Seenu, 19, Ajithkumar, 24, Velu, 25, Udaya, 23, and Aravindhan, 21.

They were booked for rioting while armed with deadly weapons, attempt to murder and dacoity with attempt to cause death, damaging public property and other offences.

They were remanded in judicial custody.
