With commercial establishments on Gandhi Nagar Main Road failing to have a provision for parking, unauthorised parking is eating into the carriageway. From West Canal Bank Road junction to the lane leading to Sardar Patel Road, near Adyar flyover, the stretch is lined with vehicles on both sides.

At points where vehicles are parked on both sides, the movement of pedestrian and vehicular traffic is extremely difficult.

Lack of sufficient illumination compounds this problem on certain sections. The lighting at a few commercial establishments is the saving grace.

Motorists and pedestrians frequenting the road have urged the Chennai Traffic Police to put an end to the unauthorised parking.

“There is no space to walk. Large numbers of motorcycles, cars and goods-carrier vehicles are parked haphazardly,” says G. Chithra Ganeshan, a senior citizen and a resident of Adyar.

As a result, walkers have to either squeeze in through the vehicles or share space with the motorists on the carriageway.

A Chennai Traffic Police official says, “We have received many complaints about this, and we have been towing away vehicles parked in unauthorised places. Yet, the problem persists. We will put an end to this soon.”
