Two fatally hit by EMU

Two men were killed and three more injured when an EMU train ploughed into a group of people crossing the track at Chromepet railway station on Thursday evening.

Government Railway Police sources said that dozens of commuters were waiting at Chromepet railway station. Around 8 p.m., it was announced that the Tirumalpur-Chennai Beach local would halt at the mainline platform instead of the suburban platform.

The commuters waiting at the suburban platform crossed the railway track in a hurry to reach the mainline platform when the incident took place.

Two men were crushed to death on the spot and some more injured. Police gave the names of one of the victims as P.Gyananamani (18) of Kanathur, Maduranthagam, in Kancheepuram district.

They suspect the second victim to be Chellappan of Guduvanchery. The bodies were shifted to Tambaram Taluk Government Hospital in Chromepet. Three more men were injured. One of them was sent to the Chromepet General Hospital and subsequently referred to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai.
