Training for medical staff on stroke care

May 18, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - CHENNAI:

With the acute shortage in stroke centres and specialised staff to deal with strokes, the Indian Stroke Association (ISA) will mentor medical staff to improve stroke detection and care.

“The mentorship programme of the ISA is for physicians, paramedics and nurses, who will be trained at the Centres of Excellence, including PGIMER Chandigarh and AIIMS to help start new stroke centres,” Dinesh Khurana, president of the ISA said, adding that currently there was one stroke specialist for every one million population in the country, which needed to be upgraded soon.

He was speaking at the launch of Fortis Malar’s Stroke Centre here on Sunday.

Dr. Khurana also said the ISA was working on a tele-stroke protocol, where big centres like the one at Fortis Malar should coordinate with physicians in the periphery to be able to administer primary care for patients who had suffered a stroke.

Often, stroke symptoms are ignored by people, Dinesh Nayak, Epileptologist, HOD- Dept. of Neurology said. The Fortis Malar stroke centre is a state-of-the-art centre offers 24x7 diagnosis and treatment.
