Tracks versus staircases

Pedestrians heading to the pathway on Kathivakkam flyover have to weigh two options; and they often choose the riskier one, for a reason

S. Malarvizhi, a resident of Anna Nagar on Kathivakkam High Road in Ennore, chooses the tracks near Kathivakkam Railway Station over the staircase, to reach the pedestrian pathway on Kathivakkam flyover-cum-grade separator. (The pedestrian walkway on the flyover provides access to Kathivakkam High Road, Ennore Express Highway and Ennore Thermal Power Station Residential Colony Road.)

Choosing to not use the staircase to get to the pathway may seem ill-advised, but Malarvizhi has her reason.

After sunset, the staircases and the space below the flyover towards Kathivakkam High Road and Ennore Thermal Power Station Residential Colony Road (also known as Kathivakkam Railway Station Road) is taken over by vagabonds and mendicants.

The staircases lack sufficient lighting, which makes it convenient for some people to turn them into a drinking spot. Pedestrians also allege that these staircases are used at night for unsavoury activities.

The space below the flyover is strewn with garbage and liquor bottles and has been turned into an open toilet.

Commuters have asked the National Highways Authority of India to provide additional lighting on the staircases and the space below the flyover.

Besides, residents have requested Greater Chennai Police to intensify patrolling on Kathivakkam Railway Station Road.

A senior GCP official says steps will be taken to intensify patrolling around the railway station after sunset, and deploy a personnel during the evening rush hour.
