The city police have unravelled the plot behind a robbery, which was committed in the busy Seven Wells area 10 days ago, with the arrest of three suspects who were part of a gang on Monday.
The Additional Commissioner of Police, North, R. Dhinakaran, told The Hindu , “Initially, we had no clue about the suspects since it [robbery] occurred on a rainy night. However, our special teams analysed CCTV footage. With the help of CCTV footage, we were able to zero-in on the offenders.”
The complainant was Rafiq Khan, 36, of Seven Wells, working in a shop which sells mobile phones at Burma Bazaar.
At 10.30 p.m. on November 1, he was riding his two-wheeler, carrying ₹10 lakh in cash from the shop to the house of its owner Nazir Khan in Seven Wells.
When Mr. Rafiq Khan reached the Annaikara Street-Perianna Street Junction, four unidentified persons, who came in two motorcycles, waylaid him.
The suspects pushed Mr. Rafiq Khan off his vehicle and brandished a knife at him. The gang attempted to snatch the cash bag. When the victim resisted, the accused, who were armed with knives, assaulted Mr. Rafiq Khan on his right hand. They then snatched the cash bag.
Special teams formed
The injured victim was admitted to a private hospital. Based on his complaint, a case of robbery was registered by the Seven Wells police. On the instruction of Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan, four special teams were formed.
“The special teams came across certain CCTV footage, which gave a clue about the type of vehicle used, facial features and other aspects relating to the identity of the accused. The availability of CCTV cameras all along the route helped to fix the identity of the accused clearly and it also highlights the importance of CCTV cameras in solving crime cases, ” the police officer said.
The police arrested three suspects — Sathish, 28, of Ponneri, Kishore, 24, of Gummidipoondi and Sheik Dawood, 42. A sum of ₹9.5 lakh was recovered from them.
